What are 'personal' websites?
Don't think of a personal website as a site designed for and about just one person. Of course, it can be just that but a personal website is more a website that has been designed after a request from an individual. That isn't to say though that the site only mentions one person. The website will often be a medium for someone to share their life.
Who would want a personal website?
Anyone that is looking for an all in one package to share any aspect of themselves with other people. This could be for pure vanity or because they are proud of something they have done or achieved or are looking for a way to pass on experiences, advice etc. that they have learnt throughout their life experiences.
Why would they want a personal website?
The answer to this question is closely linked to the previous question. There could be any one of a hundred reasons why someone would want a personal website but they could possibly be all grouped under "An all in one package allowing someone to share their news, photo's, experiences, rants and blogs that has been designed exclusively around their personality, tailored to their own creative ideas. Something that can be adapted and changed to reflect changes in their own personality".
What are the alternatives?
As mentioned above, a personal website can be an 'all-in-one' online project. The alternative would be to take each aspect of a personal website and separate them out. Thankfully the internet has many applications that you can take advantage of. An obvious example is blogger.com. You can then combine this with something like MySpace or Facebook, Snapfish or Photobucket, YouTube or Holy Lemon and what-ever else is out their you might want to add to the list. If you want to be really flash then you can have it all!
What makes a personal website different?
Two things make a personal website different from the alternatives: 1. Everything all in one place making editing, permissions etc. easy to manage and 2. It's personal. That is to say the design and content can be unique to the site owner.
